On time for the first anniversary of his death and his 100th birthday
Otto von Habsburg, who died on July 4, 2011, would have celebrated his 100th birthday in 2012. His fascinating life is characterised by the highs and lows, the terrors and hopes of an eventful century. Expelled from his home country of Austria, persecuted by the Nazis, and attacked by the communists, he fearlessly and courageously committed himself to the fight for the freedom and the unity of Europe. Otto von Habsburg not only lived and suffered through the history of a whole century, he also actively helped to shape it. He granted the authors, who accompanied him on his political journey for many years, access to all his private documents and archives. The result is this unique and closeup portrait.
Stephan Baier works as a journalist and writer of non-fiction books. He was Otto
von Habsburg’s closest political associate, his assistant at the European
Parliament in Strasbourg, and hisspokesperson. Eva Demmerle was Otto von Habsburg’s assistant at the European Parliament in Brussels, and was at his side as his spokesperson and personal assistant until the end. Both she and Stephan Baier accompanied him in his pan-European activities for over three decades.
