On A Par
Or how women began to change the world. Memoirs
She cut out a career for herself in the all-maleworld of the Bonn Republic, met all the major politicians, fought for equal rights: a contemporary witness who confidently went her own way.
As a political journalist she was one of the few women in the Federal Press Conference; she interviewed all the great men in politics, including J.F. Kennedy, Ludwig Erhard, Willy Brandt, and Helmut Schmidt. In 2004 Heli Ihlefeld hit the headlines as „Willy Brandt’s intimate secret”. As the public relations officer of the president of the German parliament, Annemarie Renger, she put women’s politics on the map. Now she tells the story of her life – the life of a courageous woman, who knew how to stand her ground and make her way in a man’s world, and who ultimately made equal opportunities for women in large German corporations a reality.
Heli Ihlefeld studied sociology and political economy. She headed the Bonn-based press agency Neuer Landes-Dienstes (NDL), and was a reporter for „Stern” and „Constanze” magazines as well as the Munich daily, „Münchner Abendzeitung”, amongst many others, before becoming involved in an affirmative action programme for women at corporate level (Deutsche Bundespost- the German Federal Post Office, Telekom). In 2000 she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. She now works as a coach and business consultant. A mother of two children, she divides her time between Berlin and the Greek island of Naxos.
