If Mao Only Knew
The people of the new China
Caught between poverty and wealth, tradition and modernity, communism and capitalism: the portrait of a country that is changing at a breathtaking pace.

A new China is developing in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. But what is happening in the rural regions? The deep divide between the newly wealthy class and poorly-paid workers, between millionaires and miners, young and old keeps widening, not only on a material level but also as regards ideology. Janis Vougioukas depicts a world power in transition. In a series of fascinating reports he portrays people from all walks of life who are having to balance their lives poised between modernisation and tradition.
