Project Mars
A dream for all mankind and a vision of the future
Off to new worlds! The red planet has been enticing people ever since the beginning of astronomy in ancient times, and Mars is one of the most striking celestial bodies. According to our current knowledge it will even be possible for humans to live there in the future. But what kind of technical requirements are necessary to begin with if we want to go there and come back again? What sort of physical and psychological exertion will the
astronauts have to endure during the flight? What will await them in the planet’s inhospitable landscape, and how will they be able to organise their lives and their survival there? The internationally renowned aerospace expert Prof Dr Jesco von Puttkamer explains why the millennium project »Mars« is no fool’s game at all, but one of the greatest and most important tasks for mankind.
Prof Dr Jesco von Puttkamer, born in 1933, is a graduate engineer and has been working for NASA’s long-term Moon and Mars programmes since 2004. He has received numerous awards for his work, e.g. for his contributions to the Saturn V moon rocket as well as the Apollo and Skylab programmes. Beyond that, he is the successful author of non-fiction books on astronautics.
