Conductors and Other Disasters
The only thing above the conductor’s desk is the sky?Cult object worshipped by the public or baton-wielding dictator? Both apply to conductors, often to one and the same person, depending on your viewpoint. But orchestra musicians, while team players by nature, are by no means innocent lambs; often they can only defend themselves from the “guy up there” with ready wit and spite. Bob Ross, horn player and band leader (“Not a conductor!”, this statement is important to him), knows whereof he speaks: His anecdotes and trips into music history are hilariously funny, but also highlight the darker sides of a world where even tragic moments range across five octaves – black Scottish humour at its best.>An (almost) serious look behind the curtain of classical Music>The coffee-table book for music fansBob Ross, born 1954 in Scotland, has been a horn player with the Munich Philharmonic for 40 years. He studied at the Royal College of Music in Glasgow and at the conservatory in Cologne. In 1985, the musician, band leader and entertainer founded the brass ensemble “Blechschaden” [Fender Bender], which has been celebrated across Europe. Bob Ross and “Blechschaden” have received the coveted “ECHO Klassik” [ECHO Classic] twice already and have been awarded the “München leuchtet” [Munich glows] award – in sheet metal, of course.
