The Original Mayerling Protocol
of Helene Vetsera: »Justice for Mary«
The moving truth: All the details on the Mayerling tragedy
The death of crown prince Rudolf and baroness Mary Vetsera remains one of the greatest mysteries of Austrian history. The case was never really closed, and new rumours about how the son of the emperor and his mistress lost their lives still emerge. Now there is a testimony that was dictated several weeks before the tragedy: the »memoir« of Mary’s mother, Helene Vetsera. On 148 pages, for the first time presented in the hand-written original and as a transcript, she clarifies that her daughter – in contradiction to what the imperial house have claimed – was not a perpetrator, but a victim. She reveals numerous details of the preceding events as well as Mary’s last letters: »I could not resist love.«
Georg Markus is one of the most successful writers and newspaper columnists in Austria. His books regularly lead the bestseller lists. In 1992, he disclosed the grave robbery of Mary Vetsera and published the book The Mayerling Criminal Case. Author of the column »Stories with History« in the daily newspaper Kurier.
Katrin Unterreiner worked as the scientific director for the Schloss Schönbrunn Ges.m.b.H. and as the curator of the Sisi Museum, which opened in 2004, for many years. She is the author of numerous books on the Habsburg dynasty, among them a biography of Crown Prince Rudolf, and she curated the Crown Prince Rudolf exhibition in the Hofburg Palace in Vienna in 2000.
