A fine society
Europe’s royal dynasties before 1918 reflected through their scandals
A GENRE PICTURE OF EUROPEAN DYNASTIES
Royal marital dramas, kings infidelities and courtesans, playboy princes, and eloping princesses. Add to that a press set on dragging the royal scandals into the limelight: the old world is close to an end, and all of the protagonists have their share in it. On the basis of numerous cases, Martina Winkelhofer paints a genre picture of European dynasties. The morals of the members of the highest society stood in stark contrast to their official picture. From aristocratic marriage politics to sexual morality, the author holds up a mirror to this period before the First World War that was so very defining for the whole of Europe.
