Riversurfing
Riding the Waves – from Munich to the Amazon
Stunning pictures of an »exotic« cult sport
Munich is the birthplace of riversurfing. The Floßlände wave, the Eisbach wave and, at high tide, the open River Isar are second home to the Munich surfing scene. Dieter Deventer documents the world of riversurfing, which revolves around engaging with nature, sporting ambition, aesthetics, self-awareness and travel. At the same time, he gives us an insight into the quirkier forms of the sport, such as night surfing or riding the waves in winter, in snow and ice, and we also learn about campaigns like »Save the Wave«, which lobbied for official recognition of (and permission for) surfing in Munich. Through breathtaking photos, reports of his own experiences and interviews with other wave riders, Dieter Deventer allows us to understand and get a feel for the surfer’s way of life. Alongside the Munich waves, which form the central focus of the book, Deventer also presents some extraordinary destinations in Canada, England, France and the Amazon. In order to achieve such a rich diversity and international coverage, several famous sports photographers have been brought on board and their involvement has helped this venture achieve an unprecedented breadth of scope.
Dieter Deventer discovered the world of riversurfing in Munich 35 years ago and has been a passionate wave rider as well as a veteran of the Munich surfing scene ever since. His personal contacts in the surfing world are second-to-none, affording him an ideal basis for candid interviews and truly up-close photographs. Whenever he is not surfing somewhere on the Eisbach or the Isar, Deventer’s work as a cameraman on feature films and commercials takes him all round the world.
