„To dance the tango is to dance to the heartbeat of Buenos Aires.”

Sensual and melancholy – the tango is the very soul of Buenos Aires. This dance is the ultimate expression of the Argentinean capital’s melting pot of cultures: synonymous with the sprawling suburbs, it is a product of optimism and despondency in equal measure. Sonja Allgaier’s book is an atmospheric portrait of the symbiotic relationship between tango and life in Buenos Aires. Her stunning photographs capture the medley of the mundane and the miraculous that make this metropolis stand out from the rest: its passionate people, hazily seductive bars and colourful street life. Tango is pure emotion – the heart and soul of Buenos Aires.

Sonja T. R. Allgaier, born in 1978, is a freelance photographer and designer with her own studio – SoTaRi – in Munich. She travels to Buenos Aires every year to work, meet family, or simply to indulge her passion for tango, and has come to regard the city as her second home.
