A charming guided tour through the history of the metropolis on the Isar, taking us from its beginnings through to the present day.

Those with a soft spot for Munich will love not only its splendid sites, but also its unique traditions . To mark the city’s 850th jubilee, Otto Zierer recounted the eventful history of Munich in a series of lively tales: depicting the settlement on the banks of the River Isar and the splendour of the Wittelsbach dynasty, the blossoming of the arts and sciences, but also the wars and famines, culminating with its post-war reconstruction. The end result was the creation of a multi-faceted and touching portrait of the »metropolis with a heart«. 50 years later, Anton Kammerl has selected the best of these stories, supplementing them with key events from recent decades to bring the collection up to date.

Otto Zierer, born in 1909 in the idyllic Bavarian town of Bamberg, studied philosophy and history in Munich and Heidelberg. He started writing very early on, primarily history books, which were banned by the Nazis, but subsequently became bestsellers with countless editions in the fifties. He was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit for his life’s work. His grandson Anton Kammerl runs an advertising agency and is Otto Zierl’s literary executor.
