When life seems to lose its meaning…
… and despondency, confusion and insomnia take over – the symptoms of depression in the elderly are difficult to recognise, as they are frequently obscured by other disorders such as dementia. As a result many depressed older people are left to cope on their own with what is a serious mental disorder – they become cut off from others and their life is increasingly defined by the wish to die. Based on extensive experience, Professor Frank Schneider and Dr. Thomas Nesseler present expert information on diagnosing depression in old age, as well as different treatments available. In addition, they offer invaluable advice for the sufferers’ relatives and companions.
Frank Schneider, Prof. Dr. med. Dr. rer. soc., born in 1958, is president of the German Association for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (DGPPN) and medical director of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychology at Aachen University.
Thomas Nesseler, PhD, born in 1959, is managing director of the DGPPN as well as the German Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy (DGKJP) in Berlin.
