What’s going on in Russia? As ARD´s (National Television Network) correspondent she experienced at first hand the years of upheaval in the Soviet Union and followed closely subsequent developments in Russia. Gabriele Krone-Schmalz reveals the discrepancies between Russian reality and the stereotypes that prevail in the West. She doesn’t shy away from showing both the conscious and unconscious distortions that affect the commonlyheld image of Russia, even tackling the most controversial issues such as Putin’s »controlled democracy«, energy policies, the freedom of the press or Chechnya.

Dr. Gabriele Krone-Schmalz, born in 1949, studied Eastern European History, political science and Slavonic Studies. At the WDR since 1976, she edited the political magazine »Monitor« from 1982, and was the Moscow correspondent from 1987–1991. From 1992 to 1998 she presented the TV- programme -»Kulturweltspiegel«. Her work won her numerous awards, including the Grimme-Preis on two occasions. Since 2000 she has been lecturing widely and been actively involved with the steering committee of the German-Russian working group»St. Petersburg Dialogues«.
