An unconditional desire for success and unscrupulous political calculation lead a young Jewish woman from Vienna into the high society of the 1930s. Not only does this middle-class daughter successfully step into the upper echelons of nobility and England’s highest circles, but thanks to her acquaintance with Lord Rothermere, Stephanie von Hohenlohe even comes into contact with Hitler. The »Führer« deploys his »dear princess« as a secret diplomat for the German cause – quite successfully, until she is arrested in the US on suspicion of being a spy. This is not the end of her career, though. On the contrary, she determinedly pursues it after the war as a newspaper journalist under Axel Springer and Henri Nannen. Martha Schad paints the multifaceted portrait of one of the most colourful women of the Third Reich.
Martha Schad, PhD, studied history and art history at Augsburg University and built up a reputation as the author of numerous books on historic female figures. Most recently she published They Loved the Führer, Women Against Hitler, and God’s Mighty Servant (made into a film).
