On the run from her family, young Elisabeth replies to an advertisement for a potential marriage partner. Max, a cotton farmer from the colonies in German East Africa, had published it in the paper and Elisabeth travels headlong to the far-off continent. A venture that will change her life forever. To gain permission to set foot on the country, she has to marry the man, who is yet a stranger to her, right on the ship. In spite of all adversities, the couple build a plantation. And as the cotton is growing so is their love.
