Based on original sources, the true story behind the legend is revealed for the first time ever.
The sea has finally been deprived of its last remaining myth. There have been mutinies ever since seafaring began, but none has captivated our imagination to quite the same extent as the mutiny on the »Bounty« in 1789. Axel Thorer’s research took him from England to Tahiti and back again, and he managed to unearth a hitherto unknown detail about this obscure adventure: it was the German mate, Heinrich Hildebrandt, who defied cruel Captain Bligh and triggered the revolt which was to have such far-reaching consequences. Based on this discovery the author re-examines the events that took place on this dramatic voyage.
Axel Thorer was born in 1939 in Namibia and spent much of his childhood there. The globetrotter and travel book writer is a member of the internationally renowned »Explorers’ Club« and acting editor in chief of the magazine »Bunte«. He descends from a German family that has been living on Majorca for four generations. In 2006 »Under the News Tree« was published by LangenMüller.
