A mysterious series of murders, an ancient code, a shocking secret, the very future of mankind at stake: a lethal game has just begun …

The dead man is lying on the cold church floor, surrounded by burning candles that have a mysterious symbolism. This brutal murder in the Church of St Ruprecht, the oldest church in Vienna, brings Paul Wagner and Georg Sina to the crime scene. The two men – one a journalist, the other a scientist – begin an investigation into a series of killings that appear to be inextricably linked to the past: to Emperor Frederick III’s fascination with secret codes and unsolvable conundrums, and how, like a bloody thread, they weave a pattern through European history. It is not long before Wagner and Sina also find themselves threatened by the merciless killer, as they discover what is at stake in this deadly game – the future of mankind!

Gerd Schilddorfer is a freelance journalist and photographer (he worked for many years with Dr Hugo Portisch, maker of the acclaimed historical documentary series Österreich II), as well as a keen global traveller and motorbike enthusiast. His exact movements are as unpredictable as the wind, but he is often to be found living and working in Vienna.
David G. L. Weiss, born in 1978, divides his time living and working in Vienna and the Waldviertel in Lower Austria. Since studying cultural and social anthropology at Vienna University, he has collaborated on several academic papers and written a novel. He is also a regular contributor to Austrian radio.
